Safe pesticides ??? - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Randy W. Sims
Are there any safe pesticides to use around ferrets? When I finished out
this room in the shop last fall, I really thought it was sealed up, but
these last few weeks have me wondering if I really did a good job. I
spent about 1.5 to 2 hours with my ferrets last night and in that time I
killed 2 spiders, ~4 small beetle like insects, a couple ants, and
swatted a few knats. I've put stuff down around the outside of the
building, but it's not helping. There are no bugs of any kind in the
house; I thought I had the shop sealed up as good, but...

Randy.
No safe pesticides that I know of. Certain times of the year when the
crawlies can start showing up, I would spray using a regular pesticide, but
spray theOUTSIDE walls of the house, under the eaves, around windows, etc -
on the OUTSIDE ONLY of the house. If that doesn't do it, you can also spray
grass and trees for a perimeter around the house and that should help a lot.
Also, look the structure over closely, both inside and outside, and close up
any openings. I wouldn't spray anything in the house tho........

WHat's the problem with having a few harmless insects in the room? It will
give the ferrets something to chase. Certainly the insects would be less
harmful than a barrage of chemicals.

I agree with you about the chemicals. In fact, I try to prefer organic
foods & other products to avoid chemicals. I guess my dislike for bugs
is due to the way I was raised. There is a part of me that knows that
bugs are part of the natural order, but there is also the voices of my
youth echoing in my mind telling me how nasty they are. I also have to
admit to being somewhat afraid of spiders. I would actually prefer not
to exterminate them; if they would just move out. I'm conflicted...

Maybe someday I'll grow up and be more accepting.

Randy.
roflol, Molly. I'm hoping it's not a black widow spider, as their bite can
make you very very ill. We have them in the desert and they hide away
during the day and can surface in the most unlikelly places at night when
they are active.

I'm NOT a 'bug' person.......in fact I have had a bug phobia since I was a
child. I still haven't overcome it and don't think I'm really interested in
overcoming it.....even tho it would free me up to do a lot more things that
I avoid during summer when the bugs 'own' any space they inhabit near me.
They can have it - I'll gladly leave the area :-)

I did get a kick out of watching one of my ferrets (Morgan) chase down and
disassemble a cricket in my livingroom once several years ago. My house is
sealed up tight and gets a spray of pesticides outside if necessary to keep
the inside 'my' space.....bugless. Heck, I'd rather drink the pesticides
myself than share my space with the bugs!!! LOL

Luckily we don't have those here :0)
'Martha' is just an ordinary big harvest spider. I 'clicked' with her when
I saw her eat the hubby. I think we have a lot in common lol. Cheaper than
divorce too.

ROFLOL..........that's exactly what I was afraid of. :-)) You girls
behave yourselves now, ya hear?

Wasps only bother me in closed-in spaces. In fact, that's really how I
feel about all bugs: they're fine outside, but inside closed spaces they
become annoying. Well, there may be some exceptions to that. Mosquitos
are annoying. So are flies on my food at picnic (who knows what they're
depositing). Walking through the yard, turning around and realizing I
just walked through a swarm of tiny little knats with my mouth hanging
open can be more than a little bothersome. Walking through a large
spiderweb can be downright traumatic. But for the most part insects
outside don't bother me.

I had just about convinced myself to buck up and follow your example
when I stumbled across a similar discussion on the ferret mailing list
(FML). Someone there mentioned a product "Bioganic Organic Insect
Control"[1] by Green Light[2]. It's supposed to be an all nature,
organic spray that environmentally safe and safe for children and pets.
After finding that, I was able to find a few other similar products by
searching google: "Victor Brand Poison-Free Ant & Roach Killer" (made
from cedar oil), "Schultz Houseplant & Garden Insect Spray" (made from
chrysanthemum flowers).

I think I'll give the Green Light product a try since the poster on FML
seemed to have a good experience with it, and it's easily available at
my local Lowes store.

I just suck random bugs into the vacuum cleaner. They don't survive. :)
I generally leave spiders alone as it doesn't bother me to have a few about
and I figure every spider I see takes care of a few other bugs for me...
