OT The baby mink - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

The baby mink have been here almost a week. Kieran, about 5/6 wks is
a jet black and Kenyon 3/4 wks is a blue sapphire. I'm keeping them
in separate cages. Baby mink imprint on each other and their mother.
It's necessary to keep them apart. They cry and chirp for their mommy
and their siblings. Life back home would be short. With me, they get
a nice long life.

Both boys are litterbox trained. Usually you need to dump a little
dirt in the litter boxes, but both caught on with no outside help.

Kieran was like a little chainsaw when I first tried to handle him.
It took about 4 days to be able to handle him without having my hand
ripped up. I had to figure otu on my own part of the biting was due
to hunger. Once I sorted out which bite behavior was which, it was
easier to teach them not to bite. Now we're working on biting nicely.
While baby teeth hurt and baby bites are painful, they don't have the
strength to do more than rip up skin. An older animal is much more
difficult to teach to bite nicely.

Kieeran is very brave and likes to go exploring. While the house is
ferret proofed it isn't set up for a baby ferret. The babies are
getting their playtime in a ferret playpen. Kenyon who is younger,
still isn't ready to go exploring on his own. He's happy to stay with
me or sleep in my jean pocket. Sometime in the next few days he'll
want to be out exploring too.
