If anyone out there can help me please let me know. Rascal stopped
eating months ago when his sister, Priss died. I had to start feeding
him my Duck Soup recipe (Listed below) all the time. The vet gave me
a mixture to help him with ulcer problems which he thought might be
developing. I've weened him off Duck Soup and am now feeding him his
regular kibble that is ground up and mixed with water. It's been
months since he ate on his own. I don't want to just lock him in a
cage with his kibble until he eats because I don't think it would work
and Iwould be starving him. Does anyone have any ideas?
P.S. Here is my Duck Soup recipe. You can decrease amounts as
needed:
1 - 5oz can of Hill's A/D
4 - 2.5oz jars of Gerber chicken babyfood
3 teaspoons Ferretone
1/2 cup ground kibble (In a blender)
1 cup Pedialyte
Blend well together. Microwave 1/4 portion on high for thirty
secounds and spoon feed. Add more Pedialyte or water for syringe
feeding.
Hope this helps some of you.

Sounds like an excellent formula to me. No doubt his problems at this
point are from missing Priss and it has become habit to have you make over
him a little to feed him. Have you considered letting him choose another
cagemate? He could just be lonely. If getting another cagemate isn't an
option, spend lots and lots of time playing with him, cuddling him, etc. to
fill those emotional gaps. I did have one ferret that i started
handfeeding and ended up doing that all the way up to his death 3-1/2 years
later. Sometimes they just need that extra love and attention that
handfeeding gives. I know it gets really a heavy load to carry after a
while and I sympathize with you. Kylie started to do the same thing after
being sick this last time. After about 6 weeks of handfeeding her, I put
the bowl down, took my finger and got a mouthful in her to get her started,
pushed the bowl up close, then just stepped back and watched to see if she
would pick uup and take over..........she did. (whew LOL) You can try
various ways of slowly backing out of your involvement in the feeding
(making him eat it out of the bowl himself instead of a spoon - just a bite
to get him started, then let him do from there himself IF he will). Just
try different things and hopefully something will work. I still think a
cagemate might be the best..........but let HIM pick her out. That makes
all the difference in the world.
Good luck........let us know if you make progress!

He has a new little sister that we got two months after Priss passed
away. Little Molly the terror. Pure Albino Marshall's girl who
brooks no insolence from Dusty and Rascal. They didn't bond as much
as I would like though they got along well at the store. I'll try
your feeding method as well. Thanks Jumpingmouse.
