Yeah, I agree. Of course, no ferrets were harmed in the making of the movie
- there would be an outcry if they were.
But after watching the movie I gave Avalon extra kisses. :)

Well I know no real ferrets were used in this film.
What I am concerned about is the depiction of our fuzzy friends in an
unknowing world.
The FIRST question I get asked whenever people stop me when walking with
them is ...
"Do they BITE?"
This is all fuelled by cinema/TV.
Recently on TV, there was "It shouldn't happen to a TV Vet" where they
showed that clip of
Richard Whitely being bitten by a ferret. I think ferrets featured 3 times
in this program.
Kinda undoes the good PR that I have been trying to portray the ferret in.
( Kind furry, fun filled mischeveous creatures ).
Still enough said.
Just got me onto the number of films that I have seen ferrets in.....
1. Harry Potter
2. Along came Polly
3. Beastmaster
4. Starship Troopers......
Can't think of any others. If anyone knows, let us know so I can look them
up.
Thanks

Quite different. A bit more humorous, but not very compassionate.

Yes. There are a lot of unhappy puppies on alt.fan.harry-potter right now.
Personally I feel the film caught the emotional impact *really* well, but
left out - I stress: not so much changed, as left out - big chunks of plot.

Ferrets have been associated w/ magic and witchcraft for as long as
people have been writing about them, so it doesn't surprise me
Rowlings would use them in her books.

>"Do they BITE?"
Stock answer:
Anything w/ teeth bites until trained not to, including ferrets.
Next comes: "Don't they have rabies?"
Stock answer:
Any land mammal can contract and shed rabies, including ferrets, but
there isn't a single documented case of a ferret ever transmitting the
disease. They tend to die before the virus shows up in salivary
glands.

I imagine vets frequently get bit, kicked, clawed, etc. by all sorts
of animals. afaik, we don't get that show this side of the pond, but I
hope the bite was portrayed as a day in the life of the average vet.

Hmm, "Kindergarten Cop; Mars Attacks; Dream Catcher; Fellowship of the
Ring"... I know there are more. Try a Google "group search" on
ferrets+movies and they'll pop up.

This wasn't too surprising, considering the choice of directors for the
first two films (Chris Columbus) was made in order to keep the fans
happy by sticking to the source material nearly verbatim. Alfonso
Cuarón (director of the third film) is known for being able to boil a
work down to the emotional core and present this in a fluid, stylized
manner. "Great Expectations" was a perfect example of this - the plot
points varied slightly in the re-telling, but each strongly important
emotional turn and tone was there.
On a more practical note, I don't think it's that big chunks of the
plot were left out so much as various devices and sub-plots that were
not absolutely required to advance the main theme. It's particularly
relevant when you start considering the size of the book they had to
start with. It would be wise to start viewing and thinking of the
movies and books as two somewhat-related but otherwise copmletely
separate entities - because from here on out, as long as Rowling is
writing such heavy YA tomes, the gap between them will only widen.

Good point. The pieces expunged could be re-introduced to the films later
and, indeed, who would remember lines from 2 films back? The only thing is
that they did not identify who Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs were. A
smart audience member may have been able to figure it out, but one line
would have helped with it.
That's my only quibble. I was crazy about the movie and I don't mind the
ferret-eating, because it is a "wild animal" eating them (albeit an animal
that doesn't exist). :)
Ferrets are not shown as mean, just as food for giant half-eagles. Rats, on
the other hand...
BTW, Get Fuzzy online has special guest stars at the moment: two mink.

Yes there were, but Jan Needle's continuation called Wild Wood the main
character is a ferret.

More tv:
General Hospital
Star Trek TNG
7th Heaven
I think there was one on Home Improvement too?
About Malfoy being turned into a ferret, I thought that too, but I'm not
certain if that was in this book or the next.
As for the ferrets at the end of the current movie, my sister was
thoughtful enough to warn me about that. Fake or not, personally, it
would still upset me. That's just me though. I think I'd be more upset
at how a scene with Malfoy being turned into a ferret in front of a
bunch of screaming kids would be handled. I hope we never find out. I
can't imagine they'd do that in a way that wouldn't be traumatic for a
ferret :(

Oh, I can. If you get a ferret in the right mood, he'll think it's great fun to
be thrown all over the place. The problem would be rounding him up afterwards.
