OK OK OK...I am confused! (not the first time...lol) I am reading different
opinions on how often to bathe my ferrets. I understand too much will dry
out their skin, causing them to make more oil and STINK even more. However,
what is "too much"?
Some say once a month...others: 3 months...someone even said twice a year!
I'd prefer to do it as often as prudent- I like how soft and fuzzie they
get right after a bath! Are there conditioning shampoos?
Thanks for the info.

I've heard people say that bathing them too often makes them smell worse,
but I personally disagree with that. I didn't even hear that until my
first ferret was about two years old - because I didnt' have a computer and
didn't know better. I used to bathe him at least once or twice a week and
he had no negative side effects from it. I used Johnson & Johnson's baby
shampoo, so it was gentle on him and I loved the way it made him smell, so I
did it. When I first saw those 'in the know' write that it was not good for
them, that it would dry out their coats, or make them stinkier, I was
baffled. Loki had the softest fur I'd ever seen and he never scratched or
anything, so I don't believe he was itchy from it either. He LOVEd to take
a bath with me, so it wasn't like I was torturing him or anything. :-)
I'd say that - more important than how often you bathe him is WHAT you use
to bathe him in and the fact that you rinse him very very well each time.
Yes, there are even baby conditioners/detanglers, although I think
Johnson's has one built into it because it always comes out soft. That's
what I used to do and never had a problem. I don't bathe my ferrets that
often anymore, but I probably still bathe them more than most people do.
Yes, I do the 'changing blankets in the cage' to keep smell down.......this
isn't about smell as such. Keeping the cage clean and blankies washed will
keep smell down as far as that is concerned. This is about the fact that I
love the smell of a newly bathed ferret......same as you do. :-)
Most if not all will disagree with me, but my personal experience says 'do
what your ferret is comfortable with'. If your ferret doesn't mind a bath,
isn't itchy, his coat is healthy looking, then I wouldn't worry about it.
If, however, he begins to scratch or taking a bath is stressful for him, or
his coat starts to dry out, I'd say definitely stop. I just don't think
that will happen as long as you use the right shampoo and possibly a creme
rinse/detangler (keeps moisture in the hair shaft).

I don't bathe mine anymore. They smell fine, and I should know: the
first thing I do everyday at playtime is pick each one up, give hugs &
kisses, and then take a big long whiff. I have no idea how it started,
but it has become part of the routine I enjoy. -- I enjoy a big whiff of
my ferrets. Each one has their own distinct smell, and I find the smell
oddly comforting. (How weird am I?) Oh, and don't misunderstand me, I
take my whiff from the front end.
I do have a large corner litter box[1] that I had water in one day, and
they started drinking and playing with it. I now keep it filled with
water for them to play in. Occassionally when we're playing, I'll throw
one of them in it. HeHe.
I went with my sister the other day to a local Garden Ridge[2]. I saw a
fountain that I'm very seriously getting for their playroom ($150 USD).
It's round, about 3 ft in diameter. Water flows in from one side (not
the middle). The sides are about 10-12 in high and it was filled with
about 3 in of water. -- It's the perfect size for a ferret swimming
pool. I'll just need to make some stone stairs to go up on both the
inside and outside so they can easily get in and out. I'll have a nice
relaxing indoor fountain and they'll have a nice pool. Perfect.

Unfortunately, they don't have it on their website-they don't have much
of anything on their website. I included the link so everyone would know
the store I was talking about.
I've tried scouring the internet to find one similar, but haven't seen
one yet. There are plenty of them out there; I just don't see any like
the one I saw at Garden Ridge:
It is a circular basin that looks like stone. The bottom is flat and the
sides are perfectly perpendicular to the floor. It sits flat on the
floor and is about 10-12 inches high. I can't remember well now, but it
seems like the fountain, where the water comes in on the side, is of the
cascading variety, The water flows into the basin rather than spurting &
splashing. The diameter was about 2-3 ft across.
It will need to be modified with a coarse filter to keep ferret hair
balls from clogging, but otherwise it seems perferct for ferrets. I'm
not sure when I'll get it, but when I do I'll post the manufacturer and
model. The manufacturer likely has pictures on their website.

Well, as the function of opinions go- we listen to many and take what we
WANT to hear from them...LOL
Ironically, I agree with both of you! I will now feel free to bathe them
(using the right conditioning shampoo, of course! Thanks Jumpingmouse!)
probably once a week, which was my first inclination before I heard I
shouldn't.
But, Randy: "I don't bathe mine anymore. I find the smell oddly
comforting. (How weird am I?) Oh, and don't misunderstand me, I take my
whiff from the front end." TOO FUNNY! These guys have been an emotional
life saver for me....I was severely depressed after moving across country,
away from everything and everyone I knew (which was part of the
point...lol) and knew I needed some unconditional love....a cat was my
first thought...a dog would be too big for my cozy (I mean crampt) apt.
When one of my colleagues showed me her "pets" I FEEL IN LOVE AT FIRST
SIGHT!
Again, thanks for the input. I want to do right by my fuzzies- they've
earned it.

Treesa....
I have never bathed my ferrets. I have found that unless they get into
something really messy, it simply is not needed. They keep themselves clean
and, as anyone who has been to my house can attest, they do not not smell.

ROFLOL............I know *exactly* what you mean about the smell being
comforting, Randy, and I'm glad to hear someone else say it!! When my three
boys (ferrets) passed to the Bridge three years ago, I wasn't going to get
any more ferrets. But after about 10 days of being in a total depression, I
got up one day and said to hubby "I HAVE to smell a ferret right now!" and I
went to the pet store and ended up getting Kylie. It was a physical 'need'.
So, new ferret owners, beware - it grows on ya and becomes a necessity after
a while. There's just something so emotionally comforting about that
slightly musky, ferrety smell!

That is so funny that you say that Jacquie! Stormy has a distinct smell
that is just intoxicating! I don't know what it is, but her musk just calms
me! Ok, except when she's climbing the cage, but then I'm not sniffing her
anyway! ;-)

I only bathe mine probably twice, maybe three times, a year. Mostly just to
help with shedding. I personally don't like how they feel right after a
bath. I like how they feel about three or four days after a bath. Then the
oils have come back but not uncontrollably. :)
