sucking ears?? - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Treesa
I have three ferrets; two boys and a girl. The girl, Rosie, I've raised
from a kit. The boys, George and Lenny (from Of Mice and Men- one is a con
artist while the other is bigger and "less aware"), I got about a month ago
from a local PetCo- they are 9 months old (approx). I recently noticed
George has a peculiar habit.

When Rosie and he are playing- he'll start sucking on her ears?!? At first
I though he was cleaning her (like monkeys do), but then I noticed he
doesn't do it to his brother. Lenny doesn't do it to the other two and
Rosie doesn't do it back??

She doesn't seem uncomfortable about it. She doesn't hackle or hiss (like a
badger) the way she usually does when startled or upset. When I try to stop
him, he'll suck on my fingers and she'll look up like I interrupted
something….LOL. Maybe he was taken too soon from his mother? That doesn't
seem the case from what the Pet store told me. Maybe its just part of his
personality?

Anywho, as Rosie doesn't seem to mind, I'm not too worries over it; they
sleep in separate cages at night. But, I would like to know if anyone else
has had a ferret do this? Thanks for the input.

Peculiar habit of a "kit" who has been weaned from the mother when he
was TOO young..
I am not an expert but have read many articles about this and this is
only one theory..

I've seen it in cats, too. Well, that's not too big a deal....he'll just be
my big baby, that's all! LOL

Thanks for the comments.

I would just watch for ear hematomas.

Gilbert has done tht to Kylie every since I've had him (two months) and i
think it's for the reasons mentioned here - being weaned too soon from his
mommy. What i was told was to watch to be sure he doesn't cause
'cauliflower ear' (the ear swells and becomes misshapen)and the other thing
to be concernd about is that the dampness might cause yeast infection in the
ear (you'll know because it will be reddish and have a smell to it if you
put your nose right by the ear). You might want to try putting a drop of
bitter apple on the tip of her ear if he does it excessively.

Good Idea...I think I'll do just that...Thanks :> Treesa

Exactly, what I was thinking. George had one cauliflower ear and I don't
know if it was due to ear sucking, untreated ear mites. The vet said that
it was a hematoma, but in any case it was deformed like cauliflower ear.
