Gwen & John
When Harry was poorly and not eating, Frosty stopped eating as well, I
thought they had the same condition so Frosty was put on antibiotics and
separated with Harry. Harry died of cancer and frosty continued with
antibiotics and another visit to the vets who said he can't find anything
wrong with Frosty. When Frosty is kept seperated from Teddy and Bo Bo he
will eat soft food i.e. Bob's chicken gravy. When I put him back with the
others, who are eating normally, he refuses to eat anything to the point of
making himself ill and losing weight.

What am I to do and has anyone else come across this problem?. I don't
think it's because he's missing Harry because he was like it before Harry
died.

Thanks

Gwen
p.s. They have prior to Harry's passing had a new court could this have
upset them enough to cause Frosty not to eat.?

I was thinking it might be something like this, or that he might not
like that particular enclosure for some reason. There may be a smell he
doesn't like, or the bowl or that corner or there may be fighting over
the bowl... Try adding extra food dishes in different places. This
should help rule the possibility of competition for the food. If that
doesn't do it, it might be that he doesn't like something about the new
cage. (Size, smell, other...)

You said frosty has been to the vet but has he had stool tests done
including having cultures grown (which can take over a week), and a full
blood panel? Do his stools look ok?

Since he was on antibiotics for a while, try adding some acidophillus (crush
a pill or open a capsule) to some of his soup for a few days to get the
proper balance of 'good bacteria' in his bowel. Also, he may be upset
because of losing his friend. You might want to give him some pepcid for a
week or so and see if it is something upsetting his tummy (1 pepcid tablet
to 5ml water, then give 1ml every 12 hours). Also, try giving him more one
on one attention. Sometimes they can actually die of grief.

Good luck. Let us know how he does.

Paula
Hi Gwen,

Do you think Frosty might cheer up if he has someone to beat up? ;o) If you
think he might like some other ferret companionship, you're welcome to come
over and visit us.

I don't know, I don't know what to think anymore. All I know is that Frosty
seems off his food. Teddy seems well but quiet. Bo Bo seems his normal self
but is lonely b'cos none of the others want to play. Perhaps it's the time
of year or something. Now I know that the food isn't too popular, and I can
change that, perhaps things will get better.

I don't know, how I could have missed the food thing. I was so tied up with
Harry that I didn't realise that Frosty was starting to get skinny as well.
Then, when I separated Frosty from the others I realised that he wasn't
eating either.

What a rubbish ferret mummy I have been. I miss Harry so much. I feel that
Harry's demise was partly my fault and that if I had realised that he had
stopped eating, his cancer wouldn't have taken hold of him so quickly. I
feel desparately sad.

Would you believe it. I throw out a bowl of Ardengrange kitten, of which
two wouldn't touch it and they other two were definitely not that keen on,
onto the lawn. Blow me down if the two who were'nt that fussed didn't start
eating it. Confused. Perhaps I'll put two bowls out and weigh to see how
much is eaten.
