I haven't seen any; maybe my ISP is filtering them out?

I don't usually see them and have for about the past week. They are
probably tweaking their filters or something. Let's hope so anyway.

I agree.....there have been way more than usual and it's getting annoying.
I try going through and deleting them before i even start reading, but it's
getting out of control. I wonder what happened to make them come through
now.

Well I guess this is the *one* good thing Cox is doing for me, because I
don't remember the last time I saw a junk post in here or in any other
newsgroup.

Now that I look back through the group knowing this... Steve's replies
to many posts make much more sense. I had no idea what the hell he was
talking about when he replied to the "Donkey *******", "My Breast
Enlargement", etc. posts ;-) I was wondering where in the hell he was
coming up with that stuff.

They must mean in the ng, although I haven't seen those, either. However, my
email is now about 90% spam for Viagra & **** like that. RoadRunner doesn't
let you filter all that crap out, unless you do it on Outlook, which I think
sucks. They all come from different addresses & stuff - how *can* you?

If anyone can tell me, I'd appreciate it. I don't want my killfile list to
get into triple-digits, & *still* be getting this garbage!

LOL, yup, that's the kind of stuff I'm seeing here this week. That would
explain that.......not that I'd want to 'splain away any of Steve's
craziness :-)

And it's not just here, but spread all through Usenet - I'm subscribed to
all sorts of newsgroups, linux hardware, medium-format cameras, medieval
genealogy, font binaries etc, and it's the same load right on through. What
a mess.
LZPL
I tried Mailwasher, etc. Did best with Nortons Internet Utilites
combination. It seperates the stuff out pretty well - searches through the
body of the letter and stuff, learns from your rejects.
Cox has recently offered their Anti-Spam stuff for free - I had refused to
pay $5 a month for them to do the stuff they shoudl be doing anyway.

Another trick - get a second e-mail and use your newsreader from there.
Then, you can just about bet that anything is Spam in that box.

My folks have RR. It should have a Spam sorter before it gets to you. Look
back ont heir site. My Dad uses theirs, and gets very few Spams. He also
uses their anti-virus, but hates it. It interferes with his video editing
and has to uninstall the thing to get any real work done. (No, not Steve's
Donkey Videos.)

Well Cox also started offering spam filtering for email--if the user
wants them too. Personally, I do not use their filtering system--I use
Mozilla's filter.

If you are having a tough time with spam, I suggest using a program that
uses Bayesian Filtering (http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_filtering).
Once you teach the filter what is and isn't junk, you'll have
significantly less spam in you inbox. My junk mail filter in Mozilla
deletes 99% of the spam for me, and it only took a dozen or so emails to
"learn".

There are other alternatives out there, MailWasher Pro for instance and
SpamAssasin, that do a wonderful job also. You can find SpamAssasin
clients here: http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/CommercialProducts

I used to do that, but it was still annoying. I tried mixing up my
email address in many different ways, but the email harvesters still got
the address.

The best idea so far, IMHO, was to add the link to a webpage I wrote,
that contains my email address. Harvesters will find addresses in
webpages also, so I scrambled up the address using javascript. I
haven't had any problems so far; people have been able to contact me,
and I don't get the harvester spam. I think it works great.

I also use mozilla <http:://www.mozilla.org>, and I agree that the
Bayesian filtering works great. Most spam automatically goes into a Junk
folder which I occasionally browse (just in case) and then delete. It
almost never falsely identifies a message as spam that isn't. Too bad it
doesn't work on usenet though.

In general I prefer it to any other mail/news client out there, and I'm
fairly certain I've tried them all at some point.

Without a doubt... I love Mozilla :-) I use Thunderbird and Firefox now
instead of the all-in-one suite, and I love them even more. One thing I
really love is not dealing with the OE and IE security flaws and virus
problems. But the tabs, and extensions are what I love the most.

In regards to the Junk Mail filter... make sure you correct it whenever
it is wrong. If it ever misses a message, be sure to click "Junk".
It's also important to tell it what's "Not Junk", so teach it those
every once in a while too.
