Well the antibiotics have made absolutely no difference to Harry. In fact
he is worse. I am taking him back to the vet tomorrow. I am going to let
her operate tomorrow, because regardless of whether she is right or wrong
about adrenal tumour it is obvious she can feel something and whatever it is
is making my little boy one very sick little ferret. I just hope he makes
it through another night.
I made some bobs gravy and he will lick a little off my finger but seems to
gag on it and then go very still and lie flat and still as if he is having
trouble breathing.

By the time you see this it'll be breakfast time in Britain, but if
you haven't been to the vet yet you might ask her for some Carafate.
Administered 15-30 min. prior to feeding it can substantially increase
appetite and firm up the stools, and even if it doesn't it can't hurt.
Don't be surprised if it turns his poop to a light brown.
btw- if your vet says she palpated an enlarged adrenal I believe her.
It's just that Harry's symptoms, other than the lump, aren't
indicative of adrenal disease. However, sometimes the only way to
track down the cause in ferrets unresponsive to medication is to open
them up. Good luck tomorrow (today in the UK).

Poor guy... sounds like he's got something going on in there, whatever
it is. I hope it's a benign non-invasive growth pushing on his cecum
or something equally simple and correctable.

Whatever it is. He sounds very congested and is just about able to breathe.
Vet can't fit him in until 3pm. Told her it's an emergency and that he will
be dead by then.
The annoying thing is is that they are the only vets around here, that I
know of, that know anything about ferrets and thats why the rescue centres
use them. It's 12.45 here and I just hope he make it till 3pm. The
annoying thing is if I was jobless I could rush him to the pdsa straight
away.
He wants to eat and drink but seems to almost suffocate on it when he does.
Does it sound like he could have eaten something that has blocked his
digestive system. Even if he's just about breathing could he still survive
the operation. What's his chances.

Sounds like he made it. The pred should help, but it takes a few days
to kick in. You'll also have to wean him off it.

pdsa...?

Suffocate or gag? Is he aspirating his food and/or water?

Gwen, even a good ferret vet can't make those calls from 7000 miles
away, and I'm not a vet. As an owner, and depending on what the
radiographs/x-rays show, I'd worry more about whether he can make it
*w/o* surgery than whether he can make it *thru* surgery. If he's
unresponsive to antibiotics, and possibly pred, an exploratory may be
necessary. If a paper clip shows up on his radios you know what to do.
If standard pics are unrevealing, a barium series would be my next
choice.
This is the way *I* would handle it from the way you describe things,
not necessarily the right way. You and your vet have a first-hand,
close-up view which is much better than mine. Take everything I say
fwiw.

You asked whether Harry suffocates after eating or gags. He suffocates,
then, if it's after drinking water, he chokes it up as lots of froth.
He's at the surgery now having his xrays and possible surgery or who knows.
I've worn the carpet out pacing about this morning. The people who lived in
my house before me liked gardening and planted many plants that come in the
polyestyrene containers. Although I have constantly, over the twenty years
we have lived here, picked out of the soil the retched stuff, it still
surfaces occasionally and I have caught one of them eating it before and am
very aware of the dangers.

Sad to say, Harry didn't make it. When they opened him up they found lots
of tumours. His lungs were full of fluid. They felt it would be cruel to
try and keep him going. Until a fortnight ago you wouldn't of thought there
was anything wrong with him so my one consolation is that he hasn't suffered
to long.
Thanks for helping me through it.

Oh Gwen I'm so sorry for you. We loved Harry when your boys visited (at
least he didn't beat up mine), and his big black nose, and his funny
ways....
