| Day4 |
I've put a second hand reared Spreo starling into the bird room this
morning. Its been eating well on its own for a couple of days now. The
parent have reared 2 in the first nest and 2 in the second but they refuse
to feed the youngest chicks in a nest. In each nest they have had 1 or 2
eggs hatch a day after the others and these chicks have little chance of
surviving. I have another speckled mousebird chick about to fledge, this
makes 5. I put the 4 chicks from previous rounds back in with the parents so
I could witness co-operative breeding. 2 of the young have helped incubate
and all 4 have helped their parents feed chick number 5. I tried to stop the
mousebirds breeding by removing nests but they made a scrape on the aviary
floor and laid eggs there. I guess they will stop when they want, not when I
want.
