Pet Canaryand Tampa International Airport - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

Hello,

I've had my canary almost a year, and really don't want to find a home for
him. I've been getting homes for my other birds. My intent is to take him
on the flight with me, in the cabin. I've done my research for the airlines
themselves.
However, my main concern is Security.
The sites I've read say to have a cage inside the carrier. No pet store
seems to have these, at least that I can find. I've got the soft-sided
carrier which is shaped sort of like a log, with smooth plastic inside. My
concern is whether or not the Security people will be wanting me to remove
the bird. I know that's the argument for the cage inside the cage.
That would mean extracting the bird, not the cage, from the carrier.
We don't want to lose a canary to a ceiling fan because of an overly-sniffy
security guard.
I thought about getting a couple of those tiny carrier boxes from the pet
store and having him sit in there for an hour (I know, that's pretty long!)
until we get through the security gate. Then, once through, I can release
him into his carrier. His Midwest Collapsible cage will be in cargo, so I
can set that up right away on the other end of the trip.
If anybody has any recommendations and places to get one or tales of
experience, please let me know. Also, will they allow for a dowel to be
inserted inside there, or are the security people going to be upset over
that? I plan to have a plastic plate in there with sliced fruit mixed with
pellets, so he gets water, sugar and nutrients. I'm planning to get the
well-bird certificate from the vet.

Any thoughts are highly appreciated.

Thanks

There is a pet store on Waters Ave. east of Sheldon Rd. and near
the Public Storage that has them. That is where I got mine. They may
not have both parts at the same time, but they are available in the
Tampa area. Call the stores around and see if they have "Come Along"
by Super Pet. or try superpetusa.com. I have one for my LB's.

When we were kids my Dad used to take us to the Tampa airport so we
could watch the planes take-off and land, but you can't even do that
anymore... go past the gate unless you are a passenger :-(

It is hard to believe that it depends on who is at the gate doing
security that day :-(

I didn't know what to make of that myself. My daughter can't come through
anymore to watch the plane take off either.

My vet today approved the tiny clear box I was intending to only use as
temporary; put him in there and then transfer to the zipper carrier. He
said to just put the box in the zipper carrier instead of transferring the
bird.
He came back with a good health certificate and is ready to go. He had two
bands, one on each leg. The vet removed the gold band but left the breeder
band with all the numbers on it. He said due to the size of the bird that
he'd have to use a dental grinding tool. Two vets did it, I guess; they
took him to another room. They had to give the poor guy some oxygen, but
he's back home eating as usual. Don't blame him for not singing, tough ...
<grin>
Looks like we close on the house in about 30 days, but I'm leaving sooner
than that.

Petco sells carriers like that, at least last time I looked. There is
an inner cage (metal bars and plastic) and a soft cover. The cover
has two windows, and both ends open with zippers. The covers are very
colorful (red, green and yellow) with drawings of bunnies and mice.

I don't remember whether they come with perches; you may have to
install a perch yourself.

I have seen the same carriers in some 'independent'
stores as well. They come in several sizes, but none
have perches, though it's an easy job to put one in.

I used one on a flight from FL to PA, and it worked
quite well, though even in just that short time, he had
managed to pick though the bars and rip away pieces
of the soft vinyl inner liner of the 'soft cover'.

Mine came with perches. Well, one perch.
