I have been trying to tame my little budgie since Christmas...he just tries
(and succeeds!) to bite everybody. I feel so sorry for him alone all day in
the cage, but he doesn't like us. I have been thinking of getting another bird
for him for company, the days must just drag by for him. I would keep it in a
seperate cage til I see how they get along, but even that would be better than
being by himself all day. Any advice? Pepper1960

How old is it, I just got a 2yr old male and he is nippy too, but in only
three days he is stepping up and riding on my shoulder, he is still nippy
but only when I have him in my hand and am trying to pet him, he prefers to
be pet with just one finger while under no grasp of any kind. Do you let it
out on top of its cage? they are inquisitive, curious, also they are a tiny
little bird and are intimidated by your size, if the cage is lower than you,
try raising it up to at least shoulder height, and above all, patience, and
you also said (us) try just one person to get close, all others are lookers
and sweet talkers to it.

I wonder how old he was when you bought him? If he was not a young bird, it
would be harder (but not necessarily impossible) to tame him.

Have you tried feeding special treats to him with your finger? Maybe if you
give him treats, he might become more friendly?

How about letting him out of the cage to explore a bit (as long as the cage
is in a safe room, maybe a room that can be closed so that your budgie does
not fly around wildly and injure himself). His personality could be
different out of the cage than when inside the cage. I have had birds who
were aggressive and territorial when in the cage, but much nicer outside.

If you do decide to get a companion for him, try to get a young one and try
to tame it. If your current budgie sees that the new budgie is friends with
you, he might let down his guard a bit. Good luck!

Budgies each have their own personalities, and I have
found that some just are not good pet prospects. This
may or may not be true in your case, but if you've
been trying since Christmas... Anyway, if you get another
budgie, your first budgie will probably be thrilled after
an initial adjustment period. Sometimes budgies really
get to be friends, sometimes they just tolerate each
other, but usually they are happiest in flocks, especially
if they are not bonded to people. Why don't you get
a handraised budgie or one that is friendly from the
get-go? This is a good way to get a good pet budgie.
Some can just be unbeatable pets if they have the right
personality for it.
