Newbie question about finch - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Andie
Hello,

I am a newbie to this group, and have a question about the mandarin finchs
that we got yesterday. We bought a male and a female who were already
living in the same cage. There was 4 birds total in the same cage. When we
got home and got them settled in their new home, things seemed to be okay
between them. But in the evening the female started to be aggressive
towards the male, not letting him climb on the perchs. She pecks at him and
won't let him climb anywhere in the cage. The male has to stay on the
bottom of the cage, as in every attempt he makes to climb on either of the
perches he gets picked on.

My question is, is this a normal behavior??? I am worried about the male,
so any advice and suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Andie

How big is the cage? Either remove the male or place food and water on the
bottom of the cage. She may refuse to let him eat and drink and you will
have a dead bird within a day or two.

Andie
The cage is really big enough for 2 small finches. It is about 15" x 15"
and 2' in height.
The female does let the male eat and drink as often as he wants. She just
doesn't want him near her on the highest perch.
Do you know why she is acting this way???
