Southern Dog moving up north - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Bike Florida
Quick question to those in the know, I have a 8 year old Basset Hound
who has spent his entire life in warm, sunny, Florida. We are having
to move to upstate NY, near Canada where it snows 90 inches a year.
What should my concerns be, if any. And are there any precautions I
should take. I am hoping he will be just fine, and adjust readily. He
is a normal health active dog, with no behavior or health issues at
all.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

North Country (Tug Hill, Adirondacks, and north) or near
Buffalo?

Hopefully the dog will live inside full-time, but during the
winter it's a particularly bad idea to have the dog sleep
outside some nights and not others - it's a known cause of
respiratory problems. Have him sleep inside every night.
Also, a coat and booties are a good investment. If you'll
be walking your dog on streets that are salted or sanded,
you'll really need booties to protect the pads on his feet
(salt is particularly corrosive). If you'll be walking on
untreated snow booties are less necessary, but keep the hair
between the pads trimmed. Spraying PAM or another cooking
spray on his feet before a walk is a safe way to keep
snowballs from forming between the pads, as well.

Also, a lot of dogs don't like to pee or poop when they come
into contact with snow when they squat, and a low-slung dog
like a Basset doesn't have to squat much. Keep an area of
your yard that you want the dog to use either cleared of
snow or packed down so that it's pretty solid.

Yea North Country!
Chateaugay, Merrill, Lyon Mountain, Malone, Dannemora, Plattsburgh, Lake
Placid?

Sorry, I'm not in the know about helping your dog, just curious where you're
moving as we have a place on Chateaugay Lake.

Sue and Atty (who can help you find a great place to play in the sun up
there, but has no clue about the snow)
