My 7yo ESS developes itchy skin on her stomach and back of her hind
legs that drives her nuts, so she bites at these areas utill they are
getting raw. She doesn't have fleas. Her coat seems to have really
dried out though over the summer, and I'm wondering if there is
anything I can put in her diet to help with this. I really think the
dry coat and itching are related but could be wrong. I feed her
Canidae food, and visited the vet and purchased some "HyLyt"
hypoallergenic shampoo which they say will help moisturise her skin.
Anyway, what do you think? A spoonful of some kind of oil in her diet?
Different shampoo?
She's been on Canidae for a few years now, and hasn't had this issue
before this summer.
Thanks, Rick

Rick,
There are many causes for itching:

Once you know the cause or causes then you know what to treat!

We add fish oil, with omega three to Kelsey#s food, as well as yoghurt, and
we bather occasionally in an oatmeal and aloevera shampoo, which does
wonders. The conditioner can be used as leavin. She's not been so bad since
we washed her several times, and now we just wash her quite occasionally.
But I would recommend a few baths in the new shampoo before you stop. It's
called Aloveen.

Rick, after you get the (probably seasonal) itchy skin resolved, you need to
seriously consider switching her diet. 7 years is a senior age for dogs, and
Canidae is a puppy food with levels of protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus,
magnesium, sodium, that aren't appropriate for an older dog. The AAFCO
statement on the back or side of the bag that reveals, "....for all life
stages" is the tip-off. Any food that carries the "all life stages"
designation means that the food met the minimum nutrient requirements for the
most demanding stage of life which is the growth (puppy) stage. Senior and
adult dogs have lower nutrient requirements, and feeding a food that is
excessively high in the things I've mentioned can lead to kidney disease as
well as a host of other issues.

Ah, I didn't catch that. Many skin problems are due to overactive skin
production... i.e. dandruff. Changing diet may really help!

I know reccomendations for dog food seem to be different depending on
you you talk to, but I'd really like to know which food you recommend.
I take great care of my dog, and she's spoiled to death (after being a
recuse dog) so of course I'd like to make sure her diet is a healthy
one.
Thanks, Rick

What about posting it here. I'd like to see what you recommend. Everyone
recommends different things. I like Science diet, but there are others which
have seemed to work well. Sometimes the superpremiums don't seem much
different from the supermarket foods, except for the price.
