I have a 7 year old Shepherd/mix female. Some time ago she started limping
now and then on her rear left leg. At first I didn't think much of it as I
have two other large dogs, and between play and chasing squirrels, etc., it
wasn't uncommon for one of them to get bumps or minor sprains.
Over time it got worse. She will go through days where she'll hold up that
rear leg nearly all the time, then, over a period of a few days, she'll
slowly start to touch the foot to the ground and walk on it, etc. Then
she'll be back to having a slight limp again until the next time it acts up
in a month or two or so.
I took her in early for her annual so the doctor could check this out, and
gave her all of the info. I'm not sure about what all is needed, but all
the vet really did was spend a few minutes feeling around the dog's leg,
massaging it, etc. From this, she seemed to conclude that it was indeed
arthritis. I could get an X-ray, but we're talking $300+ and she seemed to
act like it wasn't necessary, as she claimed to be 99% sure it was
arthritis.
I had already been giving "Lucy" glucosamine for some time, and it was
showing signs of a little improvement. The vet said to give her one adult
buffered asperin a day, too. I do 4 days on and 2 off on the asperin, as I
don't like the idea of it building up in her system like that over a
prolonged period. Still, one week ago, she was fine in the morning but at
lunch she was holding her leg up again. She's been holding it up for a week
now, but does put it down just a little now and then the last couple of
days. This time I've noticed when she uses the bathroom it seems
uncomfortable, and she "tilts" toward the good side when squatting.
I've talked to a friend who is a professional dog sitter about this and he
thinks it's arthritis too, but told me there is a drug called "Cosaquin"
(sounds like that spelling) and says it works wonders and has no major side
effects. Does anyone here use this? What were the results, cost, etc? Can
this be ordered online or am I going to have to go to the vet to get it?
etc.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Greg, Get Syn-flex. I have a 10 year old lab mix & she naturally has
arthritis. I seenan improvement right away. Talk to the person on the
phone & tel him how much your dog weighs. Kathrin weighs between 92-97
lbs & for the first 10 days I'm suppose to give her 1/2 ounce of that
stuff mixed with food cus it taste like crap. Then after the 10 days I
give her 1/4 ounce. You give this to her every day. Look it up on the
website. When you order it you get it in a few days. BTW..You don't
really have to buy the 3 bottles but if you do you I believe save $ 5.00
off each bottle. First bottle will go pretty fast because of the first
10 day thing.

If you google cosequin, you will get a lot of hits. It doesn't have to be
gotten from a vet. I don't use it, but am using a glucosamine/chondroitin
combo that I buy in liquid form from CostCo and put in my dog's food. I'm not
sure if it's my imagination, but my dog no longer hesitates to go up the stairs
(she used to sit and wait for me to carry her once in a while, which is why I
decided to try the glucosamine)
