I think my 18 month old lab has hayfever. My vet has treated him with two
lots of antibiotics, it isn't making any difference. He is a mess and sooo
depressed. I am feeling very distressed for him. Can I try human
antihistamine on him in tablet form.

Dear Gwen,
Here is the information you will need for antihistamines. Be sure,
however, that you do not use a combination product that contains
some active ingredient besides antihistamines.

I've had some success with just benadryl.

I am surprised you vet hasn't suggested Benedryl for him if he feels it is
allergies. Brandy has allergies and I give her 1 50 mg capsule of Benedryl
a day. If her allergies get really bad the vet told me I can double that
dosage. She weighs 54 lbs.
If you do choose to use Benedryl make sure the active ingredient is only
Benedryl and not any combination medications.
Also I would think about getting another opinion especially if he's treating
allergies with antibiotics. Antibiotics should be used for infections.

No, you have misunderstood me. My vet has diagnosed conjunctivitus, but
after two lots of antibiotics it is no better. I think it is an allergy to
pollen. The very sore eyes started when the gladioli opened in the garden.
They got somewhat better after antibiotics and then I had a baby and
received lots of bouquets, wham, Mojo's eyes are suddenly a real mess again.
Went back to the vets again today. He has given him 6 antihistamine
tablets, some more drops and a steroid injection. I hope all this sorts it
out. What with having a baby, I already have the blues and seeing my dog in
such distress doesn't help much.

I have a Dobie mix with loads of allergies. What I've been using lately
with a fair bit of success is Vanectyl P. It's got prednisolone and an
antihistamine. It's not a lot of steroid but it helps keep the goop and the
swelling under control when pollen, etc. is bad...golden rod is creating
havoc for him right now.

Now I understand why he prescribed the antibiotics. It looks like you might
have to give her a daily antihistamine. Has your vet suggested that yet?
If not I would ask him about it.
Brandy's had allergies that needed medication for almost 2 years now but
this year seems worse than ever for her. Hers got really bad the week we
went to camp. I don't know what was blooming but I know my eyes were
hurting and by the time we left she was squinting. I also pulled one of
Barneys tail hairs out of her eye so when it got red & the inner lid started
up over the eye the vet gave me an antibiotic ointment after she checked for
scratches. We used it for 2 weeks stopped then her eyes got worse so I used
it for 3 more weeks. After that I called the vet and when I asked about a
blocked tear duct she had me stop the antibiotic and use moisture eyes. It
was almost 10 days till I could get her into see her because of the fair.
And wouldn't you know it her eyes looked great by then and when she looked
for blocked tear ducts she told Mike it was fine. And Mike of course didn't
argue with her that it wasn't fine that her eye gets much redder and the
inner lid comes up when I quit the moisture eyes.
Well I stopped the moisture eyes for 3 days and her eye was a bit red and
seemed dry (this is a dog who up until recently had eyeboogers every time I
turned around) I used the moisture eyes for a day and didn't put any in for
2 days and had to put some in today.
I'm beginning to think her's is a combination of allergies ( she had a bad
sneezing fit last night) and a tear duct that isn't producing as much as it
should but still working some. I hate to increase the Benedryl because I
know it will dry her eyes out even more so for now I'm going to put the
ointment in every other day to see it that seems to help and my next pay
she's going to another vet I use to have him look at her. Mike is nice and
takes everyone to the vets because he works 3rd and I work first but he just
isn't descriptive enough with what's going on.
