My girl Priss recently passed away. Her friend Dusty has started to
eat less and poops a lot less. I've got an appointment with the Doc
set up and am giving him chicken baby food and 1/4 tab of Pepcid AC
once a day. Does anyone else know of anything else I can do?
jumpingmouse & kylie
Give the food more often - every 3 to 4 hours ideally. Also, "pill" form
meds are easily aspirated by ferrets. I would suggest that maybe you take
the Pepcid tab and squash it between two spoons till it's powdery. Add 10cc
of water to the powder and shake well. Shake, then give 2cc every 12 hours.
Even better than the baby food is Hills A/D, a prescription meat based
canned food., Add a little water to a big spoonful of it, mix and warm in
micro. Be sure to stir it thoroughly when it comes out of the microwave and
ttest the temperature before giving it to him. It should be about the
consistency of mustard. You may need to get some on your finger then put it
in his mouth or on his gums a few times to get him to taste it. They
usually really go after the A/D after they get the taste of it and it is
much more nutritional and full of vitamins, higher fat content, etc, etc
than just the baby food. If he doesn't take to it right away, you can
continue to feed from your fingers, use a spoon or get a large tip syringe
(without the needle) and gently squeeze out little bits at a time just
inside the side of his mouth. Be sure to keep unused portion of A/D covered
and in the refrigerator after the can is open and just warm the amount you
intend to use each time. Hope this helps!

Thanks, I already crush his med and add it to his food. I suppose I
can get some Hills A/D from a local vet without being seen(His
appointment with his regular vet is Fri). Does it sound like an ulcer
or maybe just grief?

Well grief could cause an ulcer. Let us know what the vet says and give
Dusty lots of love from all of us. :)

Give the Pepcid A/C about 10-20 minutes before feeding the soup. This gives
the Pepcid time to adhere & coat the ulcer.

Thanks, my vet told me over the phone to only give him a 1/4 tab a
day though. Which is odd because his buudy and classmate(My local
vet) said it's practically impossible to give them too much! What
concerns me though is his poop. I realize he's only eating baby food
but his poop is mostly liquid. Shouldn't he absord more of the liquid
from the food?

Diarrhea could just be from nerves from losing his cagemate. I would do
what has been suggested here until you get to the vet.......it can't hurt.
I also agree with giving the Pepcid a while before the food. I just forgot
to add that :-) Even if it's something else, this is a safe thing to do
until you can get in to the vet. Let us know what you find out.

If the diarrhea is really bad and you're concerned about him losing too much
liquids that way, you can give some Kaopectate a couple times a day to slow
down the bowel. Give 1cc adn time it between (not close to) the Pepcid.

Let us know what you find out.

Maybe even give some pedialyte? Or at least make sure he's taking in enough
water.

Thanks for all the good info and help. Dusty went to the vet today
and was pronounced healthy(and FAT). The Doc checked his stool and
couldn't find any blood or anything else. He said to just keep giving
him the Pepcid twice a day for at least a few more weeks. He started
eating dry food again today on his own and playing with his brother.
To help him out though, we got him a new little sister today. A nine
week old albino Marshall's girl. I had forgotten how sweet kits are.
Right now they're snuggled up together in an old pair of sweat pants.
Thanks again.
