After 30+ years of having budgies for pets I've decided I would like to get
a Parrotlet. I would appreciate any advice or testimonials about these
birds. I only know of one other person who has one and she's always raving
about her little buddy.

I've not had much luck trying to find a breeder in this area. I've asked at
a couple of local pet shops. One had never heard of a parrotlet. The other
had no idea how to find one. Any suggestions on where I could find this
info? Thanks

Sheila B.

Parrotlets are feisty little things. They have a lot of spunk, but
they can be nippy and totally fearless. Be very careful keeping them
near other birds-- they can either hurt them, or if the other bird is
big enough, get hurt themselves.

I have three -- a male green Pacific, Chickie, a female blue Pacific
(Penny) and their baby (Jellybean) who was born at the end of July and
who I raised only hours after being born.

In a nutshell, parrotlets are great little birds. In spite of their
tiny size, they have "big" personalities, are intelligent, outgoing,
spunky and fearless ... affectionate, love to play with their toys, and
love to spend one-on-one time with their owners. They can be stubborn
and headstrong. They can be taught to talk. Chickie can say a few
phrases like "Be good", "What'cha doin'?" and "You're so cute".
Parrotlets also have nice pleasant little voices and aren't loud. I
would describe their vocals as "chittering".

I would highly recommend a handfed male parrotlet. As in most species,
females tend to be a bit nippier. Penny will bite me now and again, but
once she calms down she's really quite pleasant. Both Chickie and Jelly
are very loving, especially Jelly who thinks I'm her mother.

For more in-depth information, I would suggest you check out Parrotlet
Express which is a list dedicated exclusively to parrotlets. There are
hobbyists and breeders on this list who may point you in the right
direction for finding a breeder in your area. Also check out Parrotlet
Ranch. If you google "parrotlet" you'll get lots of feedback which I'm
sure you'll find very informative.

Anyway, this is my own experience with parrotlets. I don't think you'll
regret getting one of these little gems. I've had budgies and lovebirds
pretty much all of my life and parrotlets are *very* different from them
.... much more of a "parrot" personality.

Hope this helps.

I just got one myself this week-end. I have two cockatiels and I just love this little guy we named him peawee. I have been told it's a female. she already chippers when I leave the room and sits close on my back and shoulder. I will send you picture here. Have fun and I will be watching all your replys so I can learn more to. Thanks
