We Have a beautiful LoveBird but her screeching is driving us crazy!
She's very tame and we let her out of her cage often. the problem is
that she will sit on my shoulder and screech, at about 10 DB's, into
my ears!
Anyone know for a cure for this? Can I have a vet remove her voice
box?
Thanks, Jerry

We had someone call the clinic the other day asking if we would remove his
peafowl's "voice box".

Dear Dr. Phil:
I have a beautiful wife, but she is a terrible nag. Do you think I can have her
vocal cords removed?

BTW, birds don't have a voice box, they have a syrinx.

The vet was yelling "no, no" at the receptionist and I was advising to get
rid of the birds. The guy was from quite a bit south of us. ( closer to
civilization) and had not been able to find anyone to do it. ( surprise,
surprise). I guess he thought since he had an acre of land his neighbors
wouldn't hear the peacock. He wanted something pretty, not noisy.

Lovebirds are noisy ... but then noise is relative. I have seven of
them and when they all chime in chorus, it can grate on your nerves.
They tend to have high-pitched screeches, but it's not all the time. I
find my budgies can be noisier (not decibel-wise) but that constant
chattering/bickering/squealing (!) can bend your ear, too. The quietest
birds I own are my three Pacific parrotlets, the noisiest is my quaker.
It sounds to me that your bird is happy and wants to be with you. And
when birds are happy/excited/frightened, they *can* be noisy. All I can
say is either get used to it *or* find your lovebird a new home if you
find you can't stand the noise. Be glad that she's an affectionate
little creature who wants to share with you. And as I said, noise is
relative ... everyone's tolerance of noise differs from person to person.
As far as removing your lovebird's voicebox goes, forget it. No
respectable avian vet would consider such a dangerous and controversial
procedure. I've heard/read that this type of surgery is performed on
dogs (debarking), but IMHO, besides being very risky, it's cruel and
unnatural.

If you don't like noise, find a home for your bird and get a goldfish.
What a great way to show your bird you love it. Chop out its means of
expressing itself. And while you are at it, clip its wings. Then you can
have a pretty feathered thing which sits silently atop its cage until you
decide you want to have it sitting silently on your shoulder.
Get it put to sleep and have it stuffed. That way you have a the perfect
bird for you.

So what sort of 'good home' would even *think* about getting her voice cut
out?
