I've never seen a canary not use a swing. However, my new one never touches
it. Is swinging something important for them? I removed the swing from the
cage, just to provide even more room, but since all previous birds have used
the swings, I just took it for granted.

Canaries need to learn how to balance on
swings when they are young. I always
provide swings to my fledgling birds as
soon as they leave the nest. I use the
type with just one hook in the middle, the
less stable, the better! When they master
balancing on that, they become lifelong
swing lovers. Sometimes I buy adult birds
from other breeders. I can tell right away
if that breeder used swings because the
bird will either avoid the swing, or take to
it like a duck to water! I ask breeders who
don't provide swings why not and they just
don't want to bother. They don't care that
some of their birds may end up as pets and
that may be their only pleasure and exercise.
I remove swings when the birds are mating
because a stable perch is best for success
in fertilization, but I put them in the weaning
cage and make sure the fledglings master
this skill.
