There is no such thing as a stupid question. I am told that an open band means an import. But now I have been told differently. An open band is a band with a split in it not solid. Who Knows!!!

In the UK breeders use Closed Bands, split aluminium or plastic rings and
stainless steel rings. It is just the breeders preference and has nothing to
do with imports. Closed rings are used for British birds as a legal
requirement, Birds cannot be exhibited, bought or sold without a government
approved ring. They are used by other breeders to show the young are captive
bred. Split rings are used by breeders for identification purposes. Birds
imported into the UK from Europe often have closed rings or split aluminium
rings. They dont have breeders initials just numbers and they are often too
big for the bird and can easily be removed.
I use many different rings for different species. Closed rings from the
Parrot Society, for Lories, Lorikeets and other Parrotlike. Closed rings from
the IOA for British birds. Closed rings from the FBA for foreign softbills
and finches. Split plastic rings are used on softbills, Lorikeets and
finches to differentiate the sexes and ages. Dimorphic birds arent rung but
young bred from them are.
