What is an open band? Glacie's band in a solid piece of something looking
like pewter. Sorry if this has been talked about before.

A close band is a solide piece of metal (might be round or flat) usually
with some letters and numbers on it indicating the breeder or similar info.
Usually indicates that the bird is captive bred. The close band is slipped
over the foot of the bird while the bird is very, very young (days old in
some species).
An open band is, well, imagine a band in shape of a "c"... which you close
around the bird's leg. Sometimes it contains codes like a close band,
sometimes, depending on the country, it is plain. It usually indicates an
imported or wild caught bird.

An open band is what is called a split ring here in uk. It can be placed on
a birds leg at any time, whereas a closed ring can only be placed on a birds
leg when it is still in the nest, it is slipped over its claws and the bird
grows into it.
