My sister just told me about a ferret that is possibly in need in the NW
Georgia area. I'm hoping that I can find some help for the little guy by
posting.
On a recent visit to her sister in law's home, my sis learned that they had
a ferret (an albino male, age unknown to me). They also have a one year old
baby, and the ferret somehow clawed the baby up (three cheers for parental
supervision, eh?). The ferret is now clearly unwanted- they even tried to
give him to my sister. We're not absolutely certain on this, but it appears
that the ferret isn't allowed out at all anymore, and is banished to the
cage :-(. My sister told me about it because she is under the impression
that they are about to turn the ferret loose into the wild, and is worried
for it's safety. She told me that she begged them to try and rehome him,
she explained to them that there are people "like her sister" (lol!) that
take in unwanted and even "bad" ferrets. I guess they didn't know that.
She is going to talk to them again soon and hopefully find out more details,
and let them know that I am going to try to help them (not that they deserve
it, but the ferret does).
Now, from what sis could tell, the ferret was being fed decent food (she's
only marginally acquainted with ferret care though). His cage is kept clean
and he doesn't stink (her description, not mine). He appears big and
healthy to her untrained eye. My sis' opinion is (get ready, biiiig shocker
coming up) that the people just didn't know what they were getting into when
they got a ferret (and still don't). Now they seem to want out of it, one
way or another. (I wonder if the baby will suffer the same fate once it
changes from a mildly annoying gurgling blob to a destructive, rambunctious
heathen?)
If there is anyone in the NW Georgia area that might want to take this
fellow in (the ferret, not the baby, though they might want to be rid of
that too, you never know), or if you know of any shelters in that area,
please let me know. I doubt that the Atlanta shelters would be much use
unless they would pick the animal up (a 130 mile round trip) because I doubt
that these people would bother to drive that far just to surrender a ferret,
especially if they already seem willing to dump it off in the woods.
Anything in Rome, Calhoun, or Dalton would probably be easy enough for them,
though.
SSDD, huh? People always seem surprised, when they find out how many
ferrets I have, that I am not breeding them. They're even further surprised
when they find out that I actually advocate AGAINST ferret ownership. It's
people like this that make me that way. Grrrr! :-(

There ARE people who will drive hours/days to pick up unwanted ferrets. May
I have your permission to post this on another ferret group? If so, please
reply with a way for someone to contact your sister so they can arrange to
get the little one. Thanks!

Hi, thanks. You can definitely post this to another group! However, there
is a small problem with contacting anybody. The actual owners have no
telephone or any way to contact them except in person. (First clue that you
can't afford a ferret- you can't afford a phone.) Communication may be
slow.
I am not 100% positive, without speaking to the folks myself, that they want
to definitely "get rid" of the ferret, so I plan on sending some snail mail
their way as soon as I can get an address for them. Right now, keep in mind
that this is third-hand information and may be partially or completely
incorrect ;-).
You can put my email addy in for contact info badlilkitten@hotmailNOSPAM.com
(remove the obvious), if you want to. Thanks.

I live just south of Atlanta and I'm looking for a playmate for my 12
week old female, so I'm not that far away if they're willing to meet my
girl and get along.
Randy.
PS. What other groups are there?

Hope you can get hooked up with the lady who posted this, B Smith.
That would be great if it would work out for you!

It did move. Did you try the URL I listed in my 2nd post that has the
archived version of the page? Make sure you get the whole URL in. In my
window it wraps around to the next line so you if you don't copy and
paste (as opposed to just clicking it) you might miss part of the URL.
It's worth it. It's a great link.

I'm just posting a little update, there's not much to say just yet. I
haven't been able to find a way to contact the owners directly, I am still
relying on my sister to be the go-between. She has to go to their house and
talk to them in person. She plans on doing that today, and reporting back
to me this evening, but she may end up giving birth instead (she's VERY
close and, being her fourth, it will probably be a very quick delivery).
She will definitely be having the baby no later than Tuesday, which means
that she will be out of commission for a while. Hopefully she can put me
into contact with the people before that happens.
I don't know the mentality of the owners, whether they are ready to turn the
ferret loose this minute or whether they might have second thoughts on
giving him up at all. I am hoping that if they are truly desperate, my
sister can get to them before they do anything rash. I am hoping that once
they find out that help is available and on the way, they will hang onto him
long enough for help to get there.
As it stands, I've got one lady who's at her ferret limit but thinks she
could squeeze another in if need be, another lady who is willing to
temporarily negatively surprise her husband (til he falls in love with the
ferret) but would need transportation help, and of course, the man who
posted here that needs a playmate for his kit (most promising reply so far).
I will be in the area on the 17th and if he is still there and still needs a
home, I will take him home with me myself. It's now just a matter of
waiting to see if they are as serious about getting rid of him as they were
when my sister last visited, and then a matter of getting his future
coordinated. I'll post an update this evening, if I can, after I speak to
my sister.
Thanks for all the replies and help!
