Hi
I just got a ferret for xmas. He is just a baby, and he screams ALOT in his
cage. I thought it was teething, but he still does it. I feed him, clean
him, give him water.... why does he still scream? we dont allow him to
wonder the house, bc of a big mean dog and 2 cats that want dinner. but i do
allow him 3 hours of playtime with me each day.
this is my 1st ferret and any suggestions would help!!!

He's a baby and he's lonely. Get another one and put in with him and your
problem will go away. He's just a baby and doesn't want to be left alone 21
hours a day. Also, does he have white on his head? If so, there is a good
possibility that he is deaf. I've heard that deaf ferts are very vocal. If
he is deaf, you will need to learn all about how to raise a deaf ferret -
not hard, just a bit different. At any rate, another ferret his size should
help with his fear - which is most likely what those screams are.

And your reply asks:

I know you didn't intend it, but it's my first chuckle of the day. Thanks.

With the ferret you got for xmas (Animals are for LIFE, not for xmas), did
you also get books on how to care for a ferret properly? Did you get
'ferrets for dummies'? Have you been to www.ferretcentral.org?

|
| jumpingmouse & kylie |
There is a book, often available on eBay, and always on Amazon.com or at
your local bookstore: Ferrets for Dummies. Please don't be offended by
the name, it's a great book and every ferret owner should have it.
As oldmolly said http://www.ferretcentral.org also has lots of information
that you can start reading while waiting for the book.
Ferrets are very UNlike any other pet and you really MUST read up on them
before trying to raise one. They are very delicate in some ways and you can
lose him to a simple illness or injury if you are unaware of some simple
things that every ferret owner is responsible. Your little one depends on
you for his health and safety. Please don't let him down - his life is
truly at stake and he won't last long if you are not informed.
