I am cross posting this with permission. This is a kind hearted lady
that never turns a ferret in need away. She wants to warn others of what
can happen.
Hello All,
looks like my bad luck is pushing over into the new year. last year i
had bought that nice 2 piece super deluxe cage for my guys. the one that was
pictured not to long ago by someone looking for a new cage. it is held
together by plastic clips. well anyway dec the 31 at 2pm az time i decided
to take a short nap. so after being asleep for about a hour i was awaken by
a loud crash. i jumped off the couch only to discover my once beautiful nice
large cage had collasped. yes with my babies inside of it. so on my knees
crying and digging through bedding, broken food dishes, litter and poop, and
shelves i found 5 injured ferrets and one was severly injured. 3 ike, clyde,
and thelma were ok. shooken up and scared but not hurt. as im trying to
locate the injured babies i see a small tail so i carefully unpile the stuff
from on top of her and discover trinket in a bad way so i get the carries
out thinking oh God dont let any of them die. well sad to say but trinket
had to be put down. she already had severe damage to her back legs and
deformailtys in her back legs anyway due to mistreatment and being cage
bound and beat with a flyswatter or something simular before i got her. but
this accident broke one of her back legs and today i found out she had
internal bleeding. the other 4 louise, bonnie, mike, and oreo are still in the
hospital. we first thought louise would lose one of her toes but it turns
out that the vet saved it and it was re-attached. bonnie was thought to have
broken ribs but thank God she has just bruised them. mike however has a
punchered lung but so far is doing very good. he is the youngest boy and
strong so he will come through. oreo has a deep cut on his foot but will be
just fine. she had to put 2 stitches in his foot. i can pick up my babies
tomarrow, but right now i only have 3 at home. after i got home from getting
my babies medicial attention i settled down and examined the cage. turns out
my kids had been busy babies and chewed the plastic clips holding this
crappy cage together. and thats why it collasped. please i urge all of you
to check your cages from time to time for damage. im throwing this horrible
cage in the garbage. i went today and bought 3 small but nice one piece
metal cages that fold up like a book for traveling or storage from petco.
and even though they are small they are safer. yes i have to seperate my
babies but its well worth it than having them die because of another
shabbily built cage that in the long run will kill more babies. i hope and
pray when any of you go looking for a new home for your fuzzies please be
wise in choosing the type with no clips. espically plastic ones. Love a sad
and upset sibby, ike, mike, thelma, louise, bonnie, clyde, oreo and at the
rainbow bridge Tina and Trinket

What a sad story. I was thinking about buying a new, bigger cage. I didn't
see the old post that had a picture of this particular cage. Does someone
know the name brand, or have another pic? I definitely don't want to put my
ferret friends inside a dangerous cage.

Make a cage. It is easy enough to do, plenty here have made them, including
me. You can make one as big as you like then for very little money indeed.

I don't know the brand of the cage, but don't buy a cage that has plastic
clips that hold it together and you should be safe. This story really lets
us all know how important it is to have a really sturdy cage.

The person who posted this originally, on another board, didn't give the
brand of hte cage (last time I looked, anyway). *However*, it sounds like a
SuperPet multi-level cage. I have 2 of these cages connected together w/ a
plastic tube connector. One cage is about 3 yrs old, the other about 2 yrs
old.
These cages come in 2 sections - an upper & lower section, & these sections
are held together w/ plastic clips. The clips are shaped kinda like an "8",
w/ one side cut off. They don't wrap all the way around the metal cage bars,
though. My guys have never chewed on them, so we've had no problems.
While our cages are completely sturdy, this story really got me concerned.
So, the hubster went out today & bought some plastic clamps at the hardware
store. They're a very hard plastic (the clips that come w/ the cage are a
softer plastic), shaped like an almost-closed "C", w/ flat extentions that
you bolt together. They wrap all the way around the bars, & they look *very*
secure. We put 15 on each cage.
I'll post this on the original board where this story was posted, as well.

This describes a Super Pets Mulilevel to a 'tee'. I have had mine for
four years. It is a dangerous cage if you don't put it together right.
The clips it comes with are total crap. I used the heavier wire-bundle
ties doubled up at every corner, and spaced every 6 inches along the
middle where they join. I bought 6 extra shelves for each cage, and
they have served us very well this whole time.

I also really like our SuperPet cages. I bought extra shelves, too, cos I
like how you can rearrange the layout of the cage. Easy to pop out & clean,
too.
As I understand it, these ferrets liked to chew on the clips that are
supplied w/ the cage. The plastic is not a very hard plastic. The clamps we
put on today are a *lot* harder plastic, & seem very sturdy. I wasn't really
worried before, but after reading this story, it did concern me, even though
she didn't say it was a SuperPet cage. You never know what can happen, &
that's enough for me.
BTW, the clamps we got were 3/8". Forgot to mention that in my other post.

I used to have a cage like that for hamsters, I agree with Cap that
using cable ties to hold it together works better than those clips.
Best of luck to the person with the injured ferrets - speedy recovery
