Help... ANTS!! in my cage! - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

Help! I'm going mental-- and so are the small fur ones. Ants are all
over their cage. I clean it and 5 minutes later they're back. Their
water bottle does seem to leak a little bit. But even still they come
for the food, too. How do I safely get rid of these ants?

MC
Draw a 1" - 2" line of liquid fabric softener around the cage and let it
dry. The small, 'piss' or 'sugar' ants won't cross the dried fabric
softener and the softener is not harmful to the furkids.

Forgot to add...then..find where they are coming into the house...a good
place to look is in your garage...they are also known as 'slab' ants
because they nest under the concrete slabs in garages. Real easy to
find..there will be a mound of dirt. I use Diazinon crystal, sprinkled
liberally where ever I see a mound of dirt. Stops 'em cold.

You may want to try boiling hot water in a tea kettle and pouring it down the ant holes that are outside your house this kills the whole colony and keeps the ant population down.I tried this last spring and it seemed to work.

I'd try an ant bait. Like a plastic roach trap but for ants. But you'd
need to be VERY careful that the ferrets could not get to it. The few
times I had trouble like that I put them inside wire mesh boxes. Ants
could still get in and out of the bait, but the ferrets couldn't get to
it.

Also, try moving your ferret food and water to the middle floor of the
cage. I never kept mine on the bottom floor for this reason.

PS: I love MC's fabric softener idea. Never heard of that one :)

I'd never heard the fabric softener idea, either.

Another idea is to spray the foundation of your house - OUTSIDE - if they
happen to be coming in cracks in the foundation, or where the foundation
meets the rest of the house structure. Also, if you have a chimney, spray up
along the outside of the chimney, esp the edges where it connects to the
house. We had ants coming in that way last summer, & this really helped us.

I've had *very* good results with a product called Terro. It is
highly toxic, so you MUST put it where the ferrets (and children, if
you have them) absolutely can't get to it. The good news is that it
is strongly attractive to ants, and they seem to find it no matter
where I put it. All you have to do is put a couple of drops on any
surface in the vicinity of the cage (but, again, well out of the
ferrets' reach), and wait. Within a couple of days, you'll notice a
line of ants marching to and from the bait (which may help you to
identify where they're coming from too -- I was surprised to note
where the other end of the line was located), with a swarm of them
around the drop. Within two weeks, the ants will be gone and you
won't see them again. Good luck.
