Corner litter box problem - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

OK, I am new with Ferrets....
Candy my female likes to get on top of the corner litter box(large type) and do
her business.
Since I have a wire cage it is easy for her to climb. The on the thing she
likes is to try and get behind the box and poop. Basically she wants that
corner. Any good ideas on how to prevent this?
I can secure the litter box better but I need to also easily remove it.

Thanks in advance.

Also, thanks for the responses to my odor issue. My thoughts are that I am just
very sensitive to ferret odor in general and the cage is kept clean despite the
issue mentioned above.

They do sell cage clips that you can attach the litterbox to the cage
w/......but my personal experience is that they're basically crap.

I drill 2 holes in each side of the box that goes up against the cage sides,
& thread a piece of wire through it & around a cage bar, to hold them in
place. Works great. You can either keep the box in the cage & scoop & wipe
down the box, or undo the wire to take the whole thing out for thorough
cleaning.

Just a thought.

Well my personal experience has been that ferrets won't use the corner boxes
as well as they will a regular rectangular litter box. And those have to be
secured to the cage or they get pushed around as a toy.

I have 3 ways we secure ours, depending on which cage they are in.

1, 2 holes about 2 inches apart, and then a length of sink plug style chain
threaded through, with a keyring on each end. I pass these through the bars
and secure it with a small dog clip.

2, Use the small bulldog style paper clips round the bars, then over the
edge of the box, the ferrets can tip the box and get these off though.

3, A bit more work, but my favourite for the corner ones, is a loop of wire
that sticks out of the corner of the cage, then a slot cut in the back
corner of the litter tray, which the wire passes through. I use a cheap
karabiner passed through this to hold the tray in place.

Hope this helps

Another thing you can do is buy two stackable litterpans, wire the
bottom one to the corner, and put the second one inside it. That way
the upper one is held tightly in place and you don't need to tie/untie
the lower one every time you clean. Never had that problem here, and
not my idea, but they say intelligence is learning from one's own

What he said :)

Also, I agree with what someone else posted: that many ferrets (most I
think) are more likely to use rectangular litterboxes and not the corner
ones "made especially for ferrets." Get small nesting rectangular cat
litterboxes and do what swamp said above and it will very likely fix
your problem.
