I tried a Hepa air filter today. It seems to help with Ferret odor. Has anyone
tried an ionized filter? Would it do a better job?
I keep the cage clean, clean droppings as they happen and change litter every 2
days. I also wash the bedding twice weekly. Baths once ebery 3-4 months.
I know the scent will always be around just looking for some innovative ideas.

Can't give you advice on the air cleaners, but I am wondering how many
ferrets you have and if it/they are descented/neutered? I have had as many
as three neutered descented males, their cage in my livingroom. With proper
maintenance there is no real smell. Usually people would come in my home,
then realize I had ferrets and very often say "I thought ferrets were
suppose to stink. I don't smell anything". Unless you are housing a whole
hob, I can't imagine that smell would be problem enough to need an air
cleaner if their cage is being maintained as it should be.
Just my two cents worth......

I have an Ionic Breeze from Sharper Image, and I *think* it makes a
difference, but the furballs didn't smell to *me* anyway.
Is it an amonia smell you are trying to get rid of? I have four
ferrets, and I need to clean out the litter box everyday. The litter
doesn't need to be completely changed out, but a lot of it does. I do
not have a problem with smell.

I don't have problem with smell either. I use a plug in air freshener. Cats
and scoop the poop everyday and change the actual litter entirely once a
weekI also wipe all the levels of the cage with a flash wipe once a
fortnight. Was the bedding evry 4-5 days. Only one poley though.

I have 11 cats using 3 litter trays indoors and there is no smell, nor was
there when I had 9 ferrets indoors. So I have to wonder what the OP is doing
wrong, or if he/she perhaps is a bit too fanatical about smells and cannot
tolerate the smallest odour of any kind indoors.

I have one of those 'too sensitive' noses. When there is an odor, there has
to be something causing it. The most likely cause in ferret smells is, like
Brian said, ammonia from the urine. If you are smelling an ammonia smell,
you aren't getting all the damp/wet litter out of the litterboxes on a daily
basis, and/or not getting the box itself scrubbed well enough to remove
lingering urine smells on at least a weekly basis. Maybe even not using
enough litter in the boxes. If it's a 'ferrety' smell, put in more blankies
and change them more often.
Ferrets do have the *ability* to cause reallllly strong odors if not
maintained properly. I once walked into a house with ferrets and it
literally made my eyes water! The people had no blankies for the ferrets
to snuggle in and the litterboxes were in dire need of a good scrubbing.

Urine smells nasty and lingers. I don't have a sensetive nose though as I
live in the countryside and 'country' smells don't bother me at all.
Still like to keep my house clean though so that any smells will be fresh
litter smells. Got a litter of puppies indoors at present so there will be
smells from the puppy pen. I simply put clean shavings on the floor so it
isn't too bad. I think that if one keeps lots of animals in the home there
are 'bound' to be smells.I am an odd soul who finds the smell of
aftershave, perfume and deodorants enough to make me sick. Give me the smell
of a fresh turd any day over that :0)

I mentioned this elsewhere, but it bears repeating: Swheat Scoop
litter is the absolute best odor-control product we've ever used,
having tried all the types of litter. It will hold down the ferret
urine amonia smell longer than anything else. Also, ferret foods with
fish as a main ingredient tend to make the feces a bit more stout in
the odor department. We found that switching from fish-based protein
ferret food to one chicken-based cut down on the potty odors
considerably. And discovering Swheat Scoop was the icing on the cake.
We do not have odor problems in our home. Try Swheat Scoop and check
the protein in the food.

Hmm, that is the nicest way of describing what most people call me :0)
I think it is all about association. Fresh puppy poop, ferret poop etc, and
shavings, and things like that remind me of the happiest times in my life.
I don't wear perfume myself and the nasty synthetic overpowering smell of
it just makes me feel sick.
If I feel the need to disguise my natural clean body smell I will use either
lavender water or rose water.
But then I am odd lol.

I use vanilla as an air freshener. I fold a paper towel into a fan and place in a
bowl, then pour some vanilla extract over the paper. Completely kills any strong
odors in the ferret room.

tsk. You int a'sposed to *eat* it selkie ;0)
Stick with a nice wood based cat litter like sophisticat. That seems to
kill any bad odours. I mean I have 11 cats and 4 litter trays, and there is
no smell at all in them. That's good going I think. It composts down well
too.

I have been using an Ozone Air Filter (as seen on TV) is has no fans or
anything and just electrostatically takes dust and stuff out of the air. It
obviously works considering the amount of dirt on the filters, but I found
no effect on the ferret smell. maybe 3 ferrets is more than it can handle.
