Do ferrets have Stroke's? - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

This morning I woke up, and my six year old Male, seems to not be able to
move his right side, his head kind of rolls right and he is dragging
himself. Acts to me like a person having a stroke. it's really odd,
because he was up and playing around yesterday and today he seems to barely
be able to move. ANy ideas?

Lin
Get him to a ferret-knowledgable vet RIGHT THIS MINUTE.

I'd bet more on insulinoma - or low blood sugar. Get the ferret to a vet and
have them run a fasting(4 hours of no food) blood glucose test - I would bet
money that it comes back well under 60....

Normal BG levels are between 90 and 120. Insulinoma is a pretty common ailment
in elderly ferrets - it is caused by islet cell tumors in/on the pancreas,
causing an overproduction of insulin and removing too much of the glucose from
the blood.

Get him tested. If this happens again, you can put honey or caro syrup on the
gums to help stabilize him - but a vet can prescribe medications to stabilize
his blood glucose levels...surgery is also an option to remove the affected
portions of the pancreas...

good luck.

One of my old ferts had a stroke this year and died sadly. One side
paralysed and one pupil cloudy and also slight droopiness of the face on the
opposite side.

I agree with what everyone else said. There's also the possibility of an
injury from a fall either in the cage or an earlier one that took some
time to swell. My first guess would be insulinoma, but strokes happen.
One of mine had a stroke following surgery many years ago. Long story.

In any case, keep in mind that Lisa's point about stabilizing the ferret
with something like honey is only to *stabilize* them. That's all. It's
not a solution. If you need to stabilize your ferret with that (and it's
insulinoma), do it and get to the vet ASAP (as in "give the honey, and
GO!) before the ferret de-stabilizes again -which it will. It's a VERY
temporary measure to help while you're racing to the vet. It's not a
solution or cure for insulinoma no matter how well it may work in that
instance.
