Stupid Purina :( - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
: : b r i a n : :
So I switched to Yesterday's News a while back, and quickly realized
what a great product it is. Then one day I bought the wrong Yesterday's
News; it comes in the same looking bag, but is the product for "small"
animals. I realized it was the wrong bag when the cashier said "Your
total is $16.82." with my reply being "HOW MUCH!!??", and her reply
"$16.82". So... being there was a huge line I just paid for the stuff.

So the "small animal" version has pellets that are 1/3-1/4th the size of
the "normal" version. After using the small animal version of
Yesterday's News my ferrets now often refuse to use the cage litter box.
They will poop on the cage floor before using the big stuff. And as
you can imagine, I refuse to pay $16.82 for litter; $9.99 is too much as
it is!

So WTF does Purina charge $7 more for a smaller pellet. Couldn't they
just sell the same damn size for large *and* small animals? Why is the
cat size (might as well just be labeled that instead of "normal sized"
animals) so damn big to begin with? "Normal" cat litter (the clay
stuff) is small, why isn't the Yesterday's News?

Anyway... I'm just frustrated about the whole damn thing, and though I
would vent here for all to read.

Sorry =| But does this make any damn sense to anyone?

No need to apologise! Nice to see a ferret-related topic on here ;o) Sadly,
I think the reason is profit. They can get away with charging more, since if
used with small animals the bag would last longer and people wouldn't think
it such a bad deal, so will buy the product. Supply and demand and all that.
Alternatively, what's the weight on the bag? Maybe they can get more
"small-sized" product into a bag of the same size. Just some initial
thoughts.....

Hmm... Well the smaller pellet bag is 26.4 lbs, and the normal is 30
lbs. I don't currently have a bag of the smaller stuff, but I'm looking
at the website (YesterdaysNews.com) and looking at the info.

Interesting enough (well maybe not, but at 4:30 am it is) I think the
last bag I bought was 30 lbs. and they do not make the small pellet cat
litter in 30# bags--only 26.4# After looking through the site, I
realize they sell a product called "Yesterday's News Small Animal
Bedding" and sell *it* in 30# bags. Maybe that is what I bought, and
not *litter* (even though it's technically the same product as litter).

I'm running low on the stuff, so I guess I will pay attention and look
at all the different bags and prices at Petsmart tomorrow.

In *my* mind, it still doesn't make sense that the small litter is more
expensive than the big pellet litter. Maybe it's time to look for the
wood-stove pellets :|

I agree punched out news paper cost too much!
But from a machinest perspective I understand why smaller diameter pellets
cost more.
The punch and die are smaller, weaker, harder to make, wont be able to punch
through as thick a stack of paper, etc.
I am paying $9.99 for 10 lbs of yesterdays news, where is it cheaper??

Les and the magic ferret "Little Miss" whos output is greater than her
input!

Well if you can't find the wood stove pellets, try Woody Pet Bedding.
You'll find it at Tractor Supply stores, with other horse stuff. Close to
the same price as wood stove pellets. If I had my choice I'd use wood stove
pellets before Woody, but I would use either one before Yesterday's News.

PIW@nowhere.net
Upon closer examanation of said pellets, I think a slury is feed into an
auger and pressed out a plate with holes in it. Like a meat grinder.
Smaller diamater pellets would still cost a bit more because the rate of
extrusion would be slower.

There are 600# of them in my garage. The 1/2 pallet (16 40# bags) cost
~$86 shipped interstore to the local Home Depot. If you don't have a
truck they'll deliver to your doorstep for another $50. Lowe's
probably has a similar deal. I order in large quantities because of
the hassle factor, and the $20 shipping charge is the same for 1 bag
or 100.

If you live in a place like FL or SoCal expect to get some funny looks
from the special order desk personnel, but if you persist they'll find
a store that carries them somewhere nearby. Mine came from the
Bakersfield store, about 2 1/2 hours away.

See 'Blazer' pellets.

Agreed. I use Forte's reader tho,

We have had ferrets for 16 years. We have also tried just about every
type of litter there is. We found one that stands far above all
others..Swheat Scoop. Made from wheat, it has a pleasant natural
odor. And it does something better than any other litter we've tried;
it controls odor phenomenally well. It is the only product we have
used for over 5 years now. Highly recommend it.

Blazer is the Home Depot brand on the west coast. In the high Midwest
(Michigan, etc.), one brand is Stove Chow.

Several years ago, on the now defunct FFML (I think it was) someone posted
wood pellet skew numbers for all the major stores around the country. I
can't find that list anymore....

Anyone been around that long that might still have it?

BTW...I buy them by the pallet as well.

The brand names in the Midwest and East are undoubtedly different. The
product is probably the same, tho.

Yeah, I remember the sku issues but would have to go to CD archives to
get details (major pain). Figured anyone wanting to know what we were
talking about could get an idea from the http://www.wowpellets.com/
website.

I'm down to 2 ferrets at the moment, so a 1/2 pallet is 3 year's
supply. Might be adding one to the business next year... maybe a whole
non-kibble fed kit this 'round..? Time to graduate...

I broke a rear spring in my car picking up woodstove pellets. But
they are the best by far. I have a compost pile in my field with
ferret litter pellets, dirt, leaves, and grass clippings. Plus I met
a woman who has a ferret named Homer because he makes "d'oh" noises...

is it very expensive? Also, is it a pet store or farm supply item? I
ask because wood pellet compost tends to rob soil of nitrogen as it
decomposes. Neighbors recommend tossing in fresh cow manure and
stuffl Thanks

Well I started looking around the web looking for prices, because I was
wondering that myself. Compared to wood-stove pellets Swheat scoop is
pretty expensive. Now, compared to my Yesterday's News it's not so
bad--about the same.
