I know that this is not exactly on topic, except for the fact that 2
of my ferrets like to snack on houseflies. I am wondering two things:
1. where do they come from?
My house is sealed up super well for winter. No way they could get
thru the windows plus it is well below freezing outside. I should
note that I don't live in squalor or anything so there are no maggots
crawling around. It's just 2 or three friendly
flies appear once in a while inside, which is crazy given the outside
temp.
Perhaps they had gone dormant in some hiding place? What I fear is
that there are a bunch of fly eggs or worms hiding somewhere. fwiw,
I am a city person all my life who only moved to the country a year
ago, so I am clueless on all the many-legged things that appear
indoors. Ferrets not included.
2. are they safe for my fuzzies to eat?
Not as a main course!! But when the flies get tired and plop on the
floor the furblobs rush over and snarfle them up like they are the
best treats. I figure it has to be ok since they are natural, and
have protein and stuff.
Also interesting to note is that there are never flies anywhere in the
ferret room (free-range ferrets I have) and they are usually in the
kitchen windows.
I can understand in the summer, when I open my door and the contents
of an entomologist's thesis flies in the place, but in winter?
thanks!
