Question on Pionus and Macaws - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Rick
Hi Gang,

I know it varies widely from bird to bird, but generally speaking,
which bird is quieter and less nippy, the Blue-headed Pionus
or Hahn's Macaw?

Thanks,
Rick

Definately Pionus, lovely quiet gentle birds who bond with anyone.

Thanks everyone.

As an owner of a hahns and having no experience with pionus. I'd have to
agree that hahns are noisy, especially in the morning, ours is always the
first of our birds to wake up and start the wah!-wah! just like a big macaw.
Also they are nippy. Nippiness seems to be the main way they communicate.
When we first got Simon he used to bite constantly and hard. Now he has a
whole range of more subtle pinches and pokes with his beak from "I don't
really like that" to "pay attention to me." He is a primadonna like macaws
in general and it is quite comical to see him strut around and show off his
wings as if he were a hyacinth. He loves to cuddle (nestle under someone's
chin) but you have to be prepared to endure a few nips until he gets
comfortable or when he is done.

Thanks mm. Your macaw sounds like our GCC.. The bird has
definite moods -- when she's in a good mood she's affectionate
beyond belief, but when something upsets her the top of her head
gets totally flat, and that's how we know to keep our distance.
We never imagined such painful nips could come from such a
little package.
